Dutch singer and Indonesian PhD graduate from Banda Aceh, Indonesia, release a music video dedicated to the victims of the tsunami
Enschede, Netherlands, Friday 19th of June - Today, Ella Meilianda from Banda Aceh, Indonesia, has obtained her PhD degree on the University of Twente in Enschede. Her research is about the changes of coastal morphology in the tsunami-affected area of Aceh. For this occasion Dutch singer Peter Fennema (nlpeter) and Ella Meilianda have released a music video, dedicated to all victims of the tsunami in 2004. In this video they appear together singing a cover of the song "Usah Kau Lara Sendiri", originally sung by Ruth Sahanaya and Katon Bagaskara. The translation of the title is "Don’t despair all alone".
The tsunami has heavily affected Ella's life, her family, her city, and her research. The video represents her personal story, it contains scenes of the recording sessions, scenes of the tsunami, footage shot when Ella went back to Aceh a few days after the tsunami, scenes of her fieldwork in Banda Aceh for her research, and photos of her family, who either survived or went missing in the tsunami.
Although the video sends a pretty intense personal anguish, Ella believes that it represents the feelings of most families in the entire Indian Ocean region that experienced the same losses caused by the tsunami of 26 December 2004. For all the victims of that day, may they rest in peace, and for those who survived, don’t despair all alone… there are always friends and family to keep you strong… and hope remains.

Wow, if you already have come that far to cover a song originally from Ruth Sahanaya (which is a song about AIDS)..... Congratulations Peter!
Really good work!

Well, "know quite a lot" is a big thing but I do like Indonesian music and I have loads of cd's and vcd's. The first cd *(after years of the awfull smal cassettetapes) I bought in a mall in Medan was Chrisye (the album black and whit "Pergilah kasih"and "Problema") a sort of "blind"date" as I didn't know much of modern Indonesian music at that time. I like various artists like Iwan Fals, Gigi, sometimes Peter Pan, Ruth Sahayana, Agnes Monica and many many other. I am also addicted to Maluku songs like those from Doddy, Ade and Naruwe and GROEP EINDHOVEN. Yesssssss, there is a band named after my hometown
When I was a small girl my mother used to take me to Indobands in the area. Probably this was the beginning of my interests for Indo/Indonesian music (and in fact for Indonesia itself) Sometimes the band let me do the vocals........
But as an addicted Indonesialover there are cd's with kroncong too............haha
Salam manis

Hallo Anne Mieke, sorry for my late reply.
After reading your previous post I would definitely say that you "know quite a lot" about Indonesian music. Thanks for sharing your story, I found some videos of Eindhoven Groep on Youtube, I guess that is the same group, right?
Pergilah Kasih is also the title of the CD. The album was first released in 1989, I think as a cassette or LP (I have the CD in the Chrisye triliogy) . I am a big Chrisye fan
Salam manis
Peter
