Hi.
I wonder if anyone can help me to understand the Indonesian attitude to 'orang kampung'.
It seems that the rich look down on them quite a lot, 'kampungan' is an insult that sums up this snobbery.
Tourists don't seem to have the same attitude towards them, but maybe because the culture is very different.
In the West it is not usual for middle-class educated people to socialise with working class uneducated people either, but in England at least it is generally a matter of pride to have made it from humble background, whereas in Indonesia it seems like people will just laugh at you for coming from the kampung.
Is this disdain almost universal in Indonesia?
