Yesterday a day full of demonstrations against the FPI because the "silent majority" and the students consider this organisation as an insult of islam.
You're right Sid, it's not all politics but has also to do with religion. But actually the whole FPI thing has more to do with politics and only a small part religion, just to get in a easy way some followers who - think - that in the name of religion they do good things with their preman attitude.
We had the same thing in Yogyakarta with symphasizers with the political party PPP (their so-called security troups) who were also holding raids on bars and restaurants, places where homosexuals gathered and places where people were gambling. Afterwards the common people found out that this group was extorting money for protection. So it seemed to be no more then a group of preman . They were "paid" back by the population of Yogya with a farewell committee .
It was ofcourse almost all about politics and money but the leaders abused some hardliners (lost souls) for their actions. And they still do.....

More good news; the leader of the paramilitary wing of FPI, Laskar Islam, is said to be found dead in a rubber plantation last night. No real confirmation. He might just be slaughtered to death by the 'silent majority' as he is probably far too coward to kill himself and become a martyr. Emoticon: Cooool

Unfortunately the police doesn't know anything yet, so it might be false hope. Emoticon:

Front Pembela Islam (Islamic Defenders Front)was formed in August 1998 and now claims branches in 22 provinces. Based in Jakarta, the FPI is led by Habib Muhammad Riziek Syihab, a religious teacher who was educated in Saudi Arabia. Like Habib, many of the top FPI leaders have Arab blood.
