Welcome to Universitas Terbuka.

A Message from the Rector.
Since my appointment as Rector of Universitas Terbuka (UT) in 2001, I have seen the relentless efforts of all the people at UT to realize our vision to become a center of excellence for distance higher education in Asia in 2010, and in the world in 2020. From top level management to the staff, all of them have directed their energy, resources and activities to establish and implement detailed, integrated yearly programs with a clear focus and priority. Through this organized team effort, we have been able to establish and sustain a quality system for UT. This QA system have brought about positive changes in UT's work culture and has lead to improved results in the delivery of services to students as well as to its stakeholders. Tangible results of the effort can also be seen in the impressive increase in the number of active student enrollment, from 267.887 students in 2001, to 400.392 students in 2007.

As recognition of our commitment to providing quality higher education, UT has been awarded with accreditation and several certifications. In September 2005, UT has been awarded with the ICDE Quality Certification and International Accreditation for the management system, from ISA (ICDE Standard Accreditation). This accreditation is proof of acknowledgement that distance education is an acceptable system to deliver quality higher education, in Indonesia, as well as in other parts of the world. In 2006, UT has obtained the ISO 9001:2000 certification for student learning material service as a reflection our efforts to continuously improve our management system. We believe that a standardized quality system will facilitate the establishment of a quality management process in most aspects of operational system of distance education, which will eventually result in quality products as well as quality services. In 2007, we are projecting for ISO certification for 12 core activities, namely academic development - covering development and production of learning materials as well as development, production, administration and processing of examination, and the operational management of 11 out of the 37 regional offices. In 2008, 16 additional activities are also being prepared for ISO certification, i.e., the General Administration Information System, the Learning Information System, the Management of Collaboration and Public Relations, the Management of Work Environment Health and Safety, and the operational management of 12 out of the remaining 26 regional offices. We are also improving our management system so that we may be awarded a predicate of Wajar Tanpa Pengecualian (WTP) from the Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK-RI). The achievement of an external audit result of a "clean opinion" will be proof of our commitment to management and financial transparency and accountability to our stakeholders.

The mission that we are undertaking requires a synergy of efforts from all lines and all units within the UT; support from the central government, the regional governmental bodies; and collaboration with external partners and international organizations. With the continuous support from our students, their inputs and demands for a better service, we will be able to always challenge ourselves for the betterment of UT and education in Indonesia.
