SBY believes Indonesia can be an economic superpower
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has showed optimism about the future of Indonesia. It would be among the five biggest economic powers in the world by 2030. That is if all components were cooperating in the management of natural resources and problems facing the nation were properly settled. "With the high potentials of our human resources and natural resources, we could realize the nation's dream of becoming a great nation if we could manage all these things very well," he told when he spoke at the Indonesia Forum Foundation in Jakarta on Friday.

Yes , its a sweet dream for this moment .
Take a look in the region , Malaysia have also their dreams.
Dr Mahatmir Mohamad had also his vision (or dream ?) with his Malaysia 2020
And their dream came be true.
.
Why can Indonesia not have a dream ?
People without dreams are losers.
I am sure its not impossible to make their (sweet) dreams to reality , look at their human and nature resources.
Russia , China en India were 25 yrs ago countries with big probleem.
But now , they are emerging forces .

It could be done, with the right government....
- improving education...
- using the resources with great care...
- improve the wildlive (animals, plants)
- improve thinking "ecowise"...
Look at Brasil, it could become and is allready partially a great nation.
(You could copy their way of improving - some - things).
It will take some time..

The article is not complete. Some additional data:

The current per capita income (GDP/population) = $ 3600,--
The economic growth of Indonesia in 2006 is estimated at 5,5% (corrected for inflation)
Inflation in 2006 is an estimated 6%
Population growth is 1,1%

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but with the current population and econmic growth, the per capita income in 2030 will be approx. $ 9600-
Which is $ 8600,-- short of SBY's desired $ 18.000,-

To reach the $ 18.000,- goal Indonesia's economy would have to structuraly grow by 8,5% the next 23 years!

There is nothing wrong with dreaming... and a president should inspire his population. However besides inpiring, a president should also follow up his promises. Good luck SBY.

Acc. an old list from 2005.
Luxembourg nr 1
Netherlands 14
Hongkong 23
Singapura 24
Malaysia 57

Suriname 92
Swaziland 101
*Indonesia 120.
The human and nature resources of Indonesia is much better than the other countries. They can self supporting and have a great possibilities for their own market.
For example the nr 1 and 14 are depend on the other countries.
The EU countries. Emoticon: Yes!
The same as nr 23 & 24.

Please make comparison between Indonesia with Suriname or even Swaziland or Fiji Islands nr 77. Now and in the future.
Indonesia have have more potential to grow.

GDP (Gross Domestic Product) = GNI (Gross National Income) - income earned by residents from outside of the country

Sorry Sid, but it is wishful thinking.
Within a few years Indonesia is running out of its nature resources (which is already happening with oil) because of bad management and the wrong mentality.
Human resources???? No way, I refer to the problem above: wrong mentality (in a lot of ways) and it's not becoming any better with the new generation.
A complete change in mentality is necessary (also mentioned in the same Jakarta Post yesterday).

Unbelievable even to suggest this! With 40 million unemployed, all big companies leaving the country for countries like Malaysia or China (less corruption and all the other problems they are confronted with in Indonesia), all the rich and bright youngsters leaving the country to study elsewhere because of the 'value' of a Indonesian university degree and never to return. And people in this forum are daring to compare Malaysia and Indonesia?? Emoticon: Stupid

Hey Sid dont forget it's the Chinese and Hindu people in Malaysia who create the economy, not the lazy (Islamic, coincidentally?) Malay people. Malaysia is more rich because they have a higher percentage of chinese people (about 30%) then in Indonesia (about 5%).

Having a dream is not the issue here, but realizing it is the issue. So I would say the people who don 't realize their dreams are the the losers.

Donít stare yourself blind on those big countries. Russia, for example, maybe prosperous but is becoming more and more corrupt. If you donít do as Mr.Putin pleases you are in big trouble, you end up in jail or you loose your business. Apart from that Russia is becoming a totalitarian ruled state. An atmosphere of fear is created by staging bombattacks, oppressing polical opponents and killing critical journalists. China is becoming prosperous too, but there is still a lot of poverty, they are facing huge energy problems and also massive environmental problems.

I agree totally with Derrick and I hope to join this discussion later....

    Begin de details te vergeten

Just like what Derrick wrote, dreaming it and implementing it are two different things.
Indonesia is a big country with excellent resources unfortunatelly the corruption is like growing a cancer that can not be cured.

    To Kiwimave:
The race is not a key factor for being success. It depends on harworks, patient and endurance.
China is not as rossy as it looks. Its own success now becomes its own enemy. It has big problem with enviroment, AIDS (Are surprise ??), the gap between the poor and the rich is so wide and YES, IT ALSO HAS CORRUPTION ISSUES !!!!
Don't ever thing that you can pass the business without bribe and kickback to the goverment.
