Police, military units clash on restive Sulawesi
|
Rival police and military units clashed in Poso, Central Sulawesi, frightening residents in a region plagued by religious violence, witnesses and police said Tuesday. The firefight late Monday lasted for about one hour, but there were no injuries. Also in Poso, unidentified people set off a small explosive device - described by police as a "blank detonator" - in a street facing a Christian church, said Central Sulawesi Police Chief Brig. Gen. Oegresono.

Military chief denies clash with police in Central Sulawesi
|
A high-ranking military chief denied that rival factions of the armed forces and police have clashed in the restive province of Central Sulawesi, a local media report said Tuesday. Major General Arief Budi Sampurna, chief of the Wirabuana Regional Military Command overseeing Sulawesi, denied the incident took place and said military and police were conducting joint patrols for the Muslim holy day of Idul Adha (Day of Sacrifice).
