I had heard ('B. Lon bilang: "Katanya ....') that the origin of most fruits, is the place where the most varietes are found .....

Well, if we look at 'bananas' in East-Indonesia there are lots of varieties:
  • pisang Ambon
  • pisang kepok
  • pisang tanduk
  • pisang susu
  • pisang radja, omong others, of course there are more varieties .......
"So much that one is able to ask himself: "Is the 'pisang' of East-Indonesian origin ???

I have a great book that discusses the origin of foods - called "Guns, Germs, and Steel". It talks a lot about the culture of Indonesia. It looks like the banana was first found in Africa, but showed up very early in Paupua. At that time long ago, there was many varieties of fruits. Over the years farmers have chosen only the crops that taste the best, few seeds, etc.etc. The other potential foods were ignored and vanished into history. That may be the reason why so many kinds of banana's are found in East Indonesia - a few extra varieties survived here.

By the way, local gossip has it that some are good to make men potent, others cure ills. The skin of the banana tree has a membrane that local healers use for band-aids. I had a bad cut above my eye- the banana tree membrane has a natural adhesive, and held the cut together so I didn't need a stitch. It has a natural antiseptic, plus falls off when the cut is sufficiently healed - unlike a band-aid or (handsplast), which you pull off and often open the wound. It is also the number one fruit shipped around the world!

    HoboC. yth.,

It could be written in that book of yours, no doubt about it - you know it yourself, but the practical fact is that numerous varieties are to be found in East-INDOnesia, even not eatable ones (pisang batu).
So the place with the most varieties avaliable are there ........
If you say varieties are there ....... introduced; who brought them there, how long ago ...... by trade, by birds, by the sea ...... so in what way ........

I tell you a comparable story, look at the potatoe, to develop new varieties, for instance against diseases of this important crop, they had to go to Peru; the country with the most varieties avaliable ...... even in the wild .......
