President: RI consuming energy inefficiently
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here Friday Indonesia was consuming energy in less efficient ways than other countries and called on the people and state officials to help conserve energy. The government is trying its best to conserve energy and to find other alternative energy sources such as solar energy, coal and castor oil, he said when inaugurating 13 geothermal and oil projects.

This is obviously true. E.G. how much hot water for the bath is produced with burning fossil fuel, while this could very well be made with solar energy? This problem is mainly caused by all the subsidies on fossil energy. This made the alternative too expensive. A chance they shouldn't have missed. Emoticon: Nooo

I hope the current situation will change this quickly.

?? they just learned that by most developed nations in the world.
Or are any of them do much different?? why should a 3rd world country like indonesia start with expansive alternative energy production when even the biggest nations in the world wont do??? Efficient solar energy is hightech - nothing indonesia can achieve.

Sacha, not true. solar energy is no high tech anymore, just often too expensive. BUT...as with mobile phones (fixed lines to rural areas are more expensive than a mobile network) in rural areas where it is too expensive to work on the infrastructure for electricity, it is an alternative for sure! By the way, Shell Solar has an office in Indonesia, with cooperation of the Dutch government. They got a 'subsidie' (grant) for it.

im talking about solar energy with more the 15% efficiency. Things that are just developed and as it is business nowadays are patented already. For that u need technology intensive production lines anyway, not labour intensive.
Sure indonesia could have the technology from years ago, but is it very efficient and worth the government money?? Shell-Solar build the largest solar power plant in germany and it will be only enough to 3000 housholds. thats just a drop in the ocean and they will for sure not build such in indonesia.

Indonesia as a 3rd world country have the technology , and not from yrs ago.
Since 1987 has the Indonesian Govt . encouraged the solar home system as an alternative to expensive extensions to the electricity network.
More than 25.000 systems have been installed.
They have installed also in villages.
Nowadays they have enough oil and still cheaper than solarenergy , but they must prepare for the future.
And the Sun ( for free ) is available for almost 365 daysper year.

pse read interesting site .
Sinar Surya
Solar Energy in Indonesia.
