Bird flu suspected in 3 deaths in Indonesia
Indonesian health officials say they believe three members of one family, living on the outskirts of Jakarta, may have died from bird flu. A one-year-old girl died last Saturday, her 38-year-old father died in hospital on Wednesday and a second daughter, 8, died on Thursday. They all died from a critical form of pneumonia.

Mass poultry culling planned to halt bird flu

Indonesia will slaughter poultry and pigs in areas most infected by bird flu, 10 days after a fourth person died from the disease, a minister said today. The government also plans to draft a law that will allow it to punish farmers who refuse to kill their poultry, Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono told reporters after a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to discuss ways to halt the spread of the avian influenza virus.

Bird flu reaches Kupang

East Nusa Tenggara governor Piet A. Tallo has requested technical institutions handling health and farming matters to be honest and tell the general public if they find the avian influenza virus in any poultry farming locations. This request was made following controversy between staff reports and findings in the field regarding the spread of the deadly virus in one of the poultry farms in the regency of Lasiana, Kupang.
