An Australian mother and daughter died of suspected food poisoning or a severe allergic reaction in Bali on Saturday, a day after arriving on the island to begin a holiday.

I strongly suspect that this is not the first time that foreigners have become sick and even died after eating in local restaurants on Bali or elsewhere in Indonesia.

My experience is that many restaurants have a policy of keeping food until it is sold, low standard of personal and kitchen hygiene in the preparation and storage of foods as well as the often low quality of food in commercial outlets. It does not help that the inadequate infrastructure in the country also means that it takes a longer timer than in Western countries for food to reach the table from the 'farm'.

There is a downside to the land of $2 beers and $5 meals! Emoticon: I love it
